Hellebores are on-trend garden plants. They have been the focus of attention for plant breeders and there are some fantastic new varieties as well as some long established stalwarts to choose from. Look out for unusual colours, they can be expensive and very exclusive. 

Hellebore winter flowers are easy to grow

Hellebore winter flowers are garden stalwarts and are really easy to grow. They are hardy, perennial plants. That means, once you’ve got them established they will clump up and come back year after year and that makes them a great investment for your garden. Here are some really exciting hellebore varieties that Richard has chosen for your gardens this season.

Hellebore ‘Snow Angels’

Hellebore ‘Snow Angels’ is a spectacular version of the hardy perennial Christmas rose, Helleborus niger. The large winter flowers have a second layer of petals, forming a double bloom effect.

The large and delightful saucer-shaped flowers of hardy perennial Hellebore ‘Snow Angels’ face outwards, and are pure white in colour with a glowing golden centre of stamens. This creates a really striking effect. Appearing in winter, they open single at first and then as the smaller inner petals grow, they magically turn into double blooms. The flowers are beautifully set off by the green, glossy and evergreen leaves. Hellebore ‘Snow Angels’ prefers dappled or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil.

Grows to a height of 35cm (14in),  and a spread 35cm (14in).

Hellebore ‘Pink Ballerina’

Hellebore ‘Pink Ballerina’ is a spectacular new variety of the hardy and perennial Lenten rose, Helleborus hybridus. The large, double pink blooms nod gently and look superb when flowering in early spring. It’s a fantastic new variety that is very special and sought after.

This brand new variety of Lenten rose (Helleborus hybridus) is a hardy herbaceous perennial that will bring a delightful splash of colour to your garden in late winter and spring. ‘Pink Ballerina’ produces numerous fully double, soft pink flowers that gently nod outwards. It flowers quite early in the season and has a compact habit. It is perfect for lightly shaded positions, including under shrubs as well as natural and woodland gardens. Or why not plant it in a beautiful pot so that you can move it around for the best effect?

Hellebore ‘Sugar Plum’

Hellebore ‘Sugar Plum’ is brand new variety of Lenten rose that has been launched for 2021. It’s a beauty. Each plant produces numerous mid-sized, icing pink flowers in early spring that are set off beautifully by its evergreen leaves. This season, make sure you bring your garden to life with Hellebore ‘Sugar Plum’. It’s an extremely pretty, hardy, herbaceous perennial plant that is a must have for every garden. Every one of the numerous, mid-sized, icing pink flowers has a really unique colour combination. The reverse of the flowers is soft pink, with icing pink on the inside that seems to glisten, drawing you towards its central deep plum eye. It’s a simply magical combination! The leaves are a glossy green and evergreen too. It is a perfect choice to plant in lightly shaded positions, including under shrubs as well within natural and woodland gardens.

Double Hellebores

Lenten roses (Helleborus hybridus varieties) are hardy herbaceous perennials that bring a delightful splash of colour to your garden in late winter and spring, from February to April. Often that’s a dull and bleak time in the garden so these plants create a very welcome end to dark and gloomy winters! These double flowered blooms have many more petals – so they really stand out and provide masses of garden flower power.

Hellebore ‘Double Green’ produces beautiful double green flowers, tinted with a little creamy-yellow. Hellebore ‘Double Purple’ has delightful, double flowers in a moody, smoky purple colour. Hellebore ‘Double White’ has double flowers as close to pure white that you can imagine. 

These are all set off by glossy green foliage and prefer positions in light or partial shade. Grow to a height of 35cm (14in) and a spread 25cm (10in).
