Meet the new groundbreaking advance in hydrangeas

The new hydrangea Groundbreakerยฎ range, truly is something fabulous and new for your garden, Geoff Hodge explains.

Sometimes plant breeders give their new varieties completely unfathomable names. While others come up with something that is totally apt. Alex Schoemaker Living Creationsยฎ has got it spot on with its new Groundbreakerยฎ hydrangeas, which firmly fit into the second category!

The new hydrangea Groundbreakerยฎ hydrangeas are truly game-changers that redefine what we can expect from this incredibly popular shrub. In recent years, gardeners have fallen back in love with hydrangeas as they realise they are perfect plants for modern, more traditional, cottage garden and seaside gardens. Whatever your gardening style, hydrangeas fit flawlessly. While the rounded blooms of mophead hydrangeas still hit the spot, more and more of us have come to appreciate and fall in love with the cone-shaped blooms of Hydrangea paniculata varieties. And the new hydrangea Groundbreakerยฎs  are the latest stand-out addition to this fabulous group.

What makes Groundbreakers so great? They have been specially bred for their unique low-growing, ground-covering habit, growing wider than high. At just 30-40cm tall, theyโ€™ll spread to around 70cm wide. This makes them the perfect choice for the front of beds and borders and they look outstanding when planted in large containers. Grow one as a table centrepiece! Despite their diminutive height, you still get a display that will blow you away. Thanks to their strong branching habit, you have a shrub that is completely covered in those typical paniculata blooms for around 100 days from July to November. Theyโ€™re tough too. Hardy to -30ยฐC, they need no winter protection and reward you year after year, whether grown in pots, borders, as ground cover or in mass plantings.
