For years I worried about using ordinary slug pellets. Then I discovered these. Reassuringly, they’re approved for organic gardening. And they work brilliantly!

  • 100% metaldyde free. My pellets are based on naturally occurring iron phosphate.
  • Slugs and snails eat the pellets, disappear underground and don’t come back.
  • Approved for organic gardening  and proven to work just as well as the traditional pellets.
  • A 1.2kg packs treats up to 240sq metres.

Description

Ruined plants, shredded leaves and unsightly slime trails! Slug and snail damage is one of the biggest problems in every garden. Traditionally, gardeners have used slug pellets made from a chemical called metaldehyde but these are, thanks goodness, being withdrawn from the market. Other gardeners have tried to deter slugs with barriers like copper bands, egg shells or wool pellets but a recent trial has found none of them to be effective. My slug pellets are different. They are based on a natural material, they work as the traditional pellets and they’re approved for organic gardening!

  • The neater solution: Slugs and snails eat the pellets, go underground leaving no unsightly bodies or slime trails. You can tell the pellets are working as they gradually disappear, each one eaten by a slug and snail.
  • Feed your plants. Another, very welcome, benefit of my pellets is that if any of them aren’t eaten by slugs or snails, they’ll gradually break down into nutrients to help feed your plants.
  • An organic solution that’s proven to work as well as traditional metaldehyde slug pellets, and, unlike some slug pellets, these control the large Spanish slug too.
  • Rain resistant. The pellets are long lasting and extra rain-fast.
  • A 1.2kg packs treats up to 240sq metres.

Questions & Answers

  • Yes. The active ingredient iron phosphate also occurs in nature. Even if a bird, pet, hedgehog or earthworm feeds on a pellet they will not be harmed. This is one of the main reasons why iron phosphate pellets are approved for Organic gardening, recommended by Which? Gardening and are the slug pellet of choice of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Please note that all plant protection products such as these, have to include standard safety warnings on the packaging which relates to keeping out of the reach of children and pets. This is standard good practice.

  • Apart from being much safer, my pellets work in a completely different way. Metaldehyde is a chemical which – once eaten – kills slugs and snails through dehydration. This results in the unsightly ‘slime trails’ commonly associated with slugs and snails. Once they have dehydrated their bodies remain on the surface of the garden. The active ingredient in my pellets is iron phosphate, a naturally occurring compound. Once the pellets are consumed the slug or snail feels unwell and immediately stops feeding. They then burrow underground to ‘hide away’ and die out of sight leaving no slime trails or unpleasant dead remains on the garden.

Not only that, my pellets last much longer than standard metaldehyde pellets in wet weather due to a special production process which allows the pellets to swell when moist and then contract back to their original size once dry. Metaldehyde pellets are unable to do this and therefore break down into ‘blue mush’ when exposed to rain making them much less attractive to slugs and snails.

  • Spread them thinly around the plants to be protected. Please don’t simply spread a circle of pellets around individual plants as that doesn’t provide sufficient protection.
  • A number of factors affect the re-application rate. It depends how much it has been raining, how quickly the slugs and snails eat the pellets as well as the number of slugs and snails in the vicinity. As a guide, reapply the pellets once the original application begins to disappear.
  • If the pellets seem to be disappearing soon after application, it means that they are being eaten by the slugs and snails. The other – and most important – tell-tale sign is that your plants and seedlings don’t show any signs of being attacked!
  • After some weeks (depending on the weather conditions) they decompose into nutrients which help feed your plants.
