Matt Biggs was a gardenersโ gardener, writer and broadcaster who regularly wrote articles for the Richard Jackson Garden website. He was a true plantsman who loved plants of all kinds. He was probably best known for his appearances on BBC Radio 4โs Gardeners, Question Time, having started on radio in the 1970s on LBCโs Weekend Matters, a gardening phone-in. He was a TV presenter, researcher and director, and wrote or contributed to more than 15 books on subjects ranging from houseplants to unusual vegetables and on historic horticultural subjects. In his garden in Hertfordshire, he created a small wildflower orchard, crammed with historic varieties, a woodland border highlighting plants commemorating the great plant collectors, and a vegetable garden filled with heritage varieties.
Sadly, Matt passed away on May 21, aged 65, just days after receiving the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour, which is limited to 63 living recipients at any one time and is reserved for gardeners who have made an exceptional and lasting impact on the practice, promotion or understanding of gardening. While receiving treatment at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, he led a major project to transform the hospitalโs outdoor spaces into a healing garden, which will become part of his legacy and his major contribution to horticulture.
