Viburnum opulus โRoseumโ, better known as the Snowball Tree, is a much-loved garden shrub and a favourite with garden designers. Every May and June, it becomes covered in large, rounded clusters of white flowers that gradually turn from fresh green to pure white, creating the wonderful snowball effect that gives this shrub its common name.
The flowers make a beautiful display on their own, but the foliage is just as useful. Its fresh apple-green, maple-shaped leaves provide a lovely backdrop for spring bulbs such as tulips and wallflowers, while the stems and foliage are also highly valued by flower arrangers. As autumn arrives, the leaves take on rich shades of red and purple, giving the shrub another season of colour.
Easy to grow and happy in most soils, Viburnum โRoseumโ is a wonderfully versatile choice for a mixed border, informal hedge or as a specimen shrub. Give it room and it will develop into a beautifully rounded plant up to around 3m tall and wide, although it can be pruned straight after flowering if you want to keep it more compact. The flowers also provide a useful source of food for bees and butterflies, adding wildlife value to its long list of qualities.
