Clematis, commonly referred to as the queen of the climbers are loved by just about everyone. They’re one of the best choices for bringing life to and brightening up walls, fences and trellis and growing up pergolas, rose arches and obelisks. Or grow them through trees and shrubs to bring even more colour and interest to these plants too. There are literally hundreds of different varieties available and we’ve chosen one of the best.
Clematis Kokonoe is a new florida type, a cross between Clematis florida and Clematis integrifolia, with the potential to produce lots of flowers over a long period from late spring into autumn, but certainly from June to September. The double flowers of rich, violet-purple petals produce an opulent display as the smaller petals form an inner ruff. The earliest blooms are singles, but as the year progresses the flowers become more double, taking on the pompom-like appearance.
Kokonoe prefers a position in the sun, but also deals well with part shade. Grow it up any structure and in a container if needs be – even in large hanging baskets and allowed to cascade down. Clematis Kokonoe is very free flowering and very rewarding and was shortlisted for RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2019.
