Pieris are very popular evergreen shrubs, providing lots of interest all year round and commonly known as lily of the valley shrub. Pieris japonica Katsura is a fabulous variety, selected for its continuous deep wine-red coloured new leaf growth during spring and summer. From March to May, it bears sprays of rose-pink, scented flowers that cascade over the glossy evergreen foliage. But that’s not all – the deep purple flower buds provide winter interest. Truly breathtaking! It has a compact habit and dark green foliage for the rest of the year. It is an RHS Plants For Pollinator choice too.
Pieris need a position in light or partial shade, certainly out of early morning sunshine, and a lime-free, acidic soil. They love the same conditions as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias and look fabulous when grown with these other lime-hating plants. It will also make a fabulous talking point when grown on its own in a large container, using ericaceous compost.
