Star jasmine or Tuscan jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, is a very popular and elegant woody evergreen climbing plant, mainly thanks to its delightfully scented flowers produced in profusion throughout summer. These are set off by the glossy evergreen leaves.
Star of Toscana is a new variety, which will become just as popular. This star performer produces masses of star-shaped flowers that start off a creamy-yellow, turning buttery-yellow as they mature, which perfume the air with an irresistible, sweet fragrance. They look lovely against the backdrop of the rich, dark green leaves that often turn bronze in winter.
It needs a warm, sunny, south-facing aspect and is perfect for growing in a large container on the patio. It is hardy down to -10C, and may need winter protection in areas prone to severe frosts.
