Honeysuckles, or lonicera, are brilliant climbers for covering walls, fences, pergolas and obelisks, and for growing over and hiding other garden structures. Not only are they long flowering, but they produce a delightful scent – mainly in the evening – so make sure to plant them close to wherever you sit or enjoy garden after the sun has gone down. Not all honeysuckles are the same, some are much better garden “doers” than others, and some don’t even have any scent! That’s why we’ve chosen three of the best – all RHS Award of Garden Merit winners.

Two are very special forms of our British native honeysuckle or woodbine, and these varieties have the strongest scent of all honeysuckles. They’re perfect choices for cottage or wildlife gardens and do best in a cool, sunny site or light shade.

Lonicera periclymenum Graham Thomas is covered in fabulously fragrant, large, tubular, white flowers, ageing to yellow, from July to September. Their sweet, honey-like fragrance will perfume a summer’s evening. This vigorous, deciduous climber will soon cover your chosen structure.

Lonicera periclymenum Serotina, the late Dutch honeysuckle, bears large, fragrant creamy-white flowers streaked dark red-purple from July to September. It will quickly cover a trellis or arch, where it associates well with climbing roses.

Lonicera japonica Halliana, the Japanese, honeysuckle, is a semi- evergreen whose fragrance, although enjoyable at any time of the day, is strongest in dimming light and in the evening. It’s a lovely, heady fragrance. Masses of white tubular flowers, ageing to yellow, smother this handsome honeysuckle from April to August. It is happy in sun or partial shade.
