Clematis, commonly referred to as the queen of the climbers are loved by just about everyone. They’re one of the best choices for bringing life to and brightening up walls, fences and trellis and growing up pergolas, rose arches and obelisks. Or grow them through trees and shrubs to bring even more colour and interest to these plants too. There are literally hundreds of different varieties available and we’ve chosen two of the best large-flowered, summer-flowering varieties. They have both earned the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Clematis Niobe features large, velvety, deep ruby-red flowers, 15 cm (6in) across with contrasting butter-yellow centres. These can clothe the plant over a long period, from early spring to autumn. To enjoy the deepest colouration of the flowers, grow Clematis Niobe in a shady spot. For best results, prune back every February.

Clematis Nelly Moser is probably the best known and most popular variety of clematis. The large single flattish flowers, up to 20cm (8in) wide, have pale rosy-lilac petals with a distinctive carmine stripe and reddish centres. These cover the plant from late spring to early summer and again in early autumn. Large fluffy seed heads follow. It is best in light to medium shade, try it on a north-facing wall, as the flower colour fades in strong sunlight. For best results, prune back every February.

Height Up to 2.4m (8ft), Spread Up to 1.8m (6ft)
