Ceanothus, commonly called Californian lilacs, are lovely tall shrubs for the middle or back of border, for growing as a wall shrub on sunny, south-facing walls or even as an informal screen or hedge. Ceanothus Skylark is one of the best, so good it has been awarded an RHS AGM. In late spring and early summer, this compact, bushy evergreen shrub is smothered in clusters of deep blue flowers set off by finely toothed, small, dark green, glossy leaves. Grow it in a south- or west-facing border with other shrubs, or give it more space as a specimen, focal point. And it looks great when grown in pots. It needs protection from cold winds.
