Helianthemums, or rock roses are so called because they love free-draining soil and were once just used in rockeries and alpine gardens. But don’t restrict them to rockeries – they’re excellent for the front of all beds and borders and look superb in containers. Or plant them along the edges of paths and steps or to cover over slopes or steep banks. They are mat-forming evergreen or semi-evergreen perennials. Once established, they become drought tolerant and they cope well with salt-laden air, making them an excellent choice for coastal gardens.
Helianthemum The Bride produces a profusion of white flowers with an egg yolk yellow blotch from May to July, often with a second flush in September, displayed against attractive silvery foliage.
Helianthemum Wisley Primrose forms a spreading mound of grey-green leaves, setting off the lemon-yellow flowers appearing over a long period from late spring onwards.
Both varieties are beautiful and very easy to grow and have been awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
