Thanks to breakthroughs in plant breeding, geums, commonly called avens, have reached new heights in popularity. These low-growing, hardy herbaceous perennials have lots going for them, from their gorgeous, colourful flowers, mounds of attractive leaves and sometimes even vibrant flower stems.
One of the best introductions in recent years is Geum Petticoats Peach. As its name suggests, its flowers look like many layered petticoats thanks to layers of frilly petals. These form large, semi-double, peach and yellow blooms above attractive mounds of attractive deep green foliage in spring, and it will rebloom all summer long. These stand out against the dark red flower stems.
Plants have a compact habit with shorter flower stems for less flopping about, and are slug, deer and rabbit resistant. The flowers face outward, rather than downwards, for a better spectacle. They are great for cutting, attract bees and butterflies, and Petticoats Peach is perfect in containers and borders.
