Why we chose it: RHS AGM winner
- Heavy crops of uniform fruit
- Good resistance to diseases
- Tried and trusted variety
- Each packet contains approx. 10 seeds
Defender is a really easy to grow courgette that produces heavy crops of classic, dark green fruit throughout summer and into autumn until the first frosts. It’s known for its dense, tasty fruit that are held on bushy plants with a fairly open habit. This makes them really easy to pick, sometimes as early as June from an early sowing. Unlike some courgette varieties, it forms a neat, 45cm (18in) by 90cm (36in) dome. As an added bonus, Defender is renowned for its resistance to diseases that normal hit courgettes, such as mildew and cucumber mosaic virus. And don’t forget to use the flowers in the kitchen too. Sow in April and May to harvest from July to October.
This variety, together with all the other varieties in our RHS AGM Veg Seed Collection, have been awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. Such plants have been awarded this accolade after testing and assessment by the society, and is only given to plants that have proved to have excellent garden performance and worth growing.
