Lathyrus latifolius, the everlasting or perennial sweet pea, is a brilliant climbing plant for walls, fences and trellis and growing up pergolas and obelisks. The flowers look just like normal sweet peas in appearance, but plants come back each year and flower every summer without having to start new plants from seed or buying in new plants. It is a beautiful climber, which is particularly good for naturalising in mixed or wildlife borders or even brightening up a dull hedge. It flowers for ages, from July to September, producing conspicuous carmine, rose or white blooms. These are also brilliant for attracting bees and butterflies and it is recommended by the RHS Perfect For Pollinators. The blooms aren’t scented, but they more than make up for this with their flower power, and they make one of the finest cut flowers. Keep cutting the blooms to keep plants flowering on and on.
