The moss-eating bacteria in Moss Remover need a soil temperature of 10C or above. In early spring and autumn, soil temperatures may not be high enough for them to work effectively. The bacteria also need a moist soil and may not be effective during hot weather/heatwaves or prolonged periods of dry weather. In these circumstances, it is important to keep the soil moist.

Product Description

Moss can be a real problem in so many lawns, especially after a wet autumn or winter. My new natural Moss Remover is a natural, plant-based lawn food that gently feeds the lawn for up to 12 weeks, while naturally removing any unsightly moss.

Why Richard Jackson Moss Remover is Different:

Most gardeners use chemical based moss killers to get rid of moss on their lawns, but these turn the dying moss black (so it looks horrible), and they can also scorch the lawn and stain the patio. Then you have to rake out the dying moss, which is often hard, back-breaking work. My new natural Moss Remover is a much better alternative.

  • It’s natural, high in potash, and will gently feed the lawn for up to 12 weeks
  • As the grass grows, the potash in the feed ‘over feeds’ the moss, which then gradually (after 20 days or so) dies back naturally, you’ll see it slowly turning brown
  • The granules also contain naturally occurring ‘friendly‘ bacteria that then start to ‘eat’ the dying moss which gradually disappears as your grass grows
  • There’s no need to rake out the dying moss, nature does the work for you
  • It’s child, pet and wildlife friendly
  • The special formula also includes humates to help improve the root zone of the grass
  • No scorch (if applied according to the instructions) and it doesn’t stain patios

My new natural Moss Remover is now even better than my previous formula. It now contains more moss beating potash and even more (13 species) of the natural occurring ‘friendly’ bacteria to remove the dying moss.

How to Use:

Moss Remover can be used from March to the end of September.

If the lawn contains a lot of moss, it can take a while for the grass to fill the patches. It’s quicker, and very easy, to re-seed the patches using my Triple Use Grass Seed. Then, for the very best results, feed with Lawn Magic during the summer (see pics below).

One 5kg bag of my Moss Remover can treat up to 100sqm of lawn (applying 50g per sqm). If the lawn has a lot of moss, apply 100g per sqm, so it will treat 50sqm in total.

FAQs

Moss Remover is organic based. It contains special plant nutrients that gently feed the lawn, while also having an indirect action against moss, which as it dies, is gradually eaten by the natural bacteria. Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller contains inorganic fertilisers and kills the moss using iron sulphate. It also contains a weedkiller. There’s no need to rake out the dead moss when using Moss Remover, but you will with Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller.

Use Moss Remover first. As the nutrients in Moss Remover feed the lawn for up to 12 weeks, there shouldn’t be any need to apply Lawn Magic before this. But keep an eye on the lawn, and if you think it does need a feed during this time, it will be fine to do so.

We recommend waiting for one month after applying Moss Remover before doing any re-seeding. This is not only because you need to wait roughly this amount of time to see how much bare space appears due to the moss dying, but also because – as it contains plant feed, and the bacteria return nutrients to the soil – the existing grass may grow back to fill in the bare gaps anyway! This obviously depends on the amount and quality of the existing grass and the amount of moss present initially.

Providing the SOIL temperature (it’s soil temperature, not air temperature) only dipped below 10C for a few hours – rather than extended periods of days – it shouldn’t adversely affect Moss Remover. The bacteria will just sit dormant and should come back into life when temperatures increase. You should wait at least three to four weeks to see if the moss starts to die before re-applying it.

We recommend cutting the grass before applying Moss Remover, as this will make it easier to get it into the top of the soil where it’s needed to work. You can apply it straight afterwards. Don’t mow the lawn for 7-10 days afterwards.

Yes, absolutely. There is nothing in Moss Remover that will have any effect on the grass clippings to make them unsuitable for composting.

They shouldn’t be applied at the same time – as this will overfeed the lawn – but they can be used in tandem to produce a beautiful lawn. Moss Remover does a great job in March. Then around mid-April, when the weeds start to grow, use Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller to kill any remaining moss, give the lawn a feed and, crucially, kill the weeds. From the end of May, if the weeds have all gone, start to use Lawn Magic, but if any weeds remain or have just emerged, use Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller once more, then start using Lawn Magic from July onwards.

Providing you follow the instructions on the container and keep Moss Remover on the grass, there will be no problems with your shrubs.

Moss Remover is formulated to only be used on grass lawns.

As Moss Remover only contains plant nutrients and a natural bacteria that only attacks moss, then it is perfectly safe to pets, animals, wildlife etc. But, as with any lawn treatment, it makes sense to keep any animals off the turf while it is being applied and until it is watered in, to prevent them getting any of the dry material on their paws or in their hair, to prevent them carrying it around with them.

There is nothing in Moss Remover that has been shown to have any adverse effects on any animals.

Spreader Application Rates

Richard Jackson Moss Remover is most easily and accurately applied with a spreader. Here’s some information using spreaders, as well as the application settings for four of the best selling lawn spreaders.

EverGreen® Wizz Year-Round Spreader

Setting 6.5, Double Pass

EverGreen® Handy Spreader

Setting 3 x 4 Passes

Scotts® Evergreen™ Drop Spreader

Setting 2.75 Double Pass

Scotts® EasyGreen™ Rotary Spreader

Setting 27 Double Pass

It is important to note that the information given below should only be used as a guide. We would always recommend applying at a lighter rate over the area until you are sure that the settings of your spreader reflect the size of lawn you are trying to cover. The golden rule is you can always apply more on but you can’t take it off, so always err on the side of caution.
