Going for gold at Chelsea

Two of the biggest rivals in garden design – Cleve West and Andy Sturgeon – are set to go head to head at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016.

Chelsea Flower Show

Cleve West is set to design M&G’s Chelsea Flower Show garden, while Andy Sturgeon will design the garden for The Daily Telegraph. The two previous winners at the annual horticulture extravaganza will battle it out to be favourite to win the biggest prize in horticulture – ‘Best in Show’ at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

West’s Chelsea record is two ‘Best in Show’ awards and five Gold Medals in all, as well as a Silver Gilt. Sturgeon won ‘Best in Show’ in 2010 with The Daily Telegraph and six Golds between 2005-12 and a Silver Gilt.

Among other designs, the Rich Brothers have applied to return with Cloudy Bay after winning Gold in 2015, while Hugo Bugg is set to return with Royal Bank of Canada. Jo Thompson is also set to design another show garden. ‘Best in Show’ 2015 winner Dan Pearson is unlikely to return as he is busy with the Garden Bridge in London, while Prince Harry’s 2015 Sentebale charity garden designer Matt Keightley is also not believed to be back for 2016. Australian TV star Charlie Albone is believed to be keen to return.

Final decisions on who has won a place at the show are being made in October, with a bumper crop of prospective designers – the largest for several years – having submitted entries for the event happening over 24 – 28 May 2016

Veteran garden designer and Love Your Garden presenter David Domoney said: “When you see these guys back you know you’re in for some great gardens.”
