It’s rare for a plant to have fabulous foliage and beautiful flowers, but this new introduction, Centaurea ‘Silver Feather‘ has it all. It’s a tough, hardy perennial with wonderful unusual flowers and soft, feathery, silver foliage too. The large, lilac pink cornflowers have an attractive bristly appearance and stand out perfectly against the frosted silver foliage. The plants are compact and the perfect choice for your summer garden. Centaurea ‘Silver Feather’ will look fantastic this summer at the front of a sunny border or in a patio planter.
They are excellent plants for attracting butterflies and bees and provide vital nectar and pollen for these precious pollinators.
Border stars
Centaurea ‘Silver Feather’ are easy to grow and have very few pest or disease issues, keeping maintenance to a minimum.
- For the best value and results, grow from plug plants that can be planted directly into your garden where you want them to flower, or pot them into 9cm pots using a quality compost such as Richard Jackson’s Premium Multi Purpose Compost. Allow the roots to fill the pots and then plant out when established.
- Choose a final planting spot at the front of your sunny garden border and plant into well-drained soil. These plants will spread, so space them out for the best results, approximately 30cm apart or more, is ideal.
- After flowering cut the stems back to the base to encourage new growth and once established, each plant can be divided in the autumn to create additional plants for your garden or to share with gardening friends.
- Feed centaurea twice a week with a Richard Jackson’s Flower Power Premium Plant Food until they are established and once every 4-6 weeks thereafter.
- These plants die back at the end of the season, but they are hardy perennials and will not require any winter protection! They will start to sprout into growth again next spring creating a bigger and better display each year.
